24 days and counting now until the biggest ridiculously excessive day of the season. The day that all our power bills reach their Zenith for the winter. The day that garbage men fear. The day filled with fattening goodies and unnecessary excesses of all shapes and sizes. How I love it.
Yes I am the shopper, the hanger of an obscene amount of lights, the baker as well as the eater, the purpetrator of useless(but fun) gifts. I am the embodiment of all the crass commercialism that Christmas is.
Yet when it comes to me I ignore what I want and instead feed of the wants and needs of my friends and family. I love the looks I can capture when the perfect gift is opened. Or when someone pulls up infront of my house just to see the lights. When my family bitches and moans about calories, as they eat more of the cookies. I love snuggling with my son to watch The Grinch for the 8 millionth time( I know it so well I can say it word for word, yet still not as well as I know Monty Python-energizebunny)
I guess what I really want(other than a home depot gift certificate-my lawn is a shambles and needs lots of assistance) is for everyone to come together more the way they do this time of year. Oh I know I sound like a hippy now, but it's true. I want the sillyness I can share with my boy, and the oohs and ahhs we make when driving down the street. I want the thoughful reguard we give to those less fortunate. I want all of it. But maybe that's what makes it so special for me. The fact that once a year we take a brake and appriciate a tree, or sit together at a table on on a couch and laugh without agenda. That we are aware of others more distinctly than any other time.
Ah well, no matter. If you really want to give me something for Christmas....shoes the gift that keeps on giving
